The comeback of the check

Some form of checks are almost always 'in'.

For instance, this summer gingham was the go-to print, and now, as the weather gets a little chillier we're seeing the Prince Of Wales check pretty much everywhere.

But what about that brown check? You know, the one that was banished in about 2004, due to its 'chav' Burberry label?

Yep, believe it or not, that's back too.

Fashion Week SS18 saw several designers including Dior, Prada and Versace bring their retro prints and logos back into circulation, which was oh-so exciting. After all, who doesn't love a big dollop of nostalgia?

However, nothing came as more of a surprise than Burberry returning to their roots and reviving their iconic brown check. We mean, really? Is that even possible? We thought it was dead and buried along with Gap hoodies... but apparently not.

And if there was any doubt, after all, a lot of catwalk trend don't always catch on.

Rihanna shook the Internet just last week by stepping out in head-to-toe Burberry check. Officially giving it the style seal of approval, because let's face it, if RiRi's doing it, then we want to too.

To be honest, I was already on-board with the Burberry print, as you all know I love anything nostalgic.

However, I couldn't afford a Burberry coat 10 years ago, and I still can't now. So, I went hunting on the high-street for the best way to recreate the look, and what I found was actually better than I could ever of imagined....

For autumn/winter 2017 we all know your coat has to be three things in order to be on-trend:

1. Checked
2. Tailored
3. Oversized

And guess what? I found a coat from River Island, which has all the three-in-one PLUS statement sleeves.

Yep, I hit the jackpot.

The coat takes grandpa-chic to new levels, and I am SO here for it.

In fact, I'm pretty happy to just let the coat do all the talking this autumn, as I blend in with the orange leaves and feel like Inspector Gadget.

In order to give the outfit more structure, I paired the oversized coat with a leather skirt and white tee to balance everything out. I then finished it off with very Gucci-esque accessories that are actually from H&M. You're welcome.

Now, I've never actually owned a tailored longline coat, I just normally steal my sisters (soz Lou). However, I was surprised at how easy it was to style for day and night (and how much I loved it).

For the day, I paired it with a preppy loafer - who do I think I am? I'm wearing loafers. This coat has changed me.

Obviously for a evening look, I would totes vamp things up a bit and rock it with a LDB and killer patent boots.

However, for now I'm really enjoying feeling all Mary-Kate and Ashley, wearing all things baggy and watching it magically work. After all, the oversized-ness means I can throw on a vest, jumper and cardi underneath and I can still look chic AF.

So, there you have it, if you want high-end designer vibes, which ticks every single coat check box for AW17, then you're looking at the coolest coat out there. Or, at least I think so.

Right, I'm off to go twin with my Pap whilst humming, "Go Gadget go. Go Gadget go. Inspector Gadget who-hoo Inspector Gadget."
